Peter Anastos’ The Sleeping Beauty Wraps Season

BOISE, IDAHO – Ballet Idaho Artistic Director Peter Anastos has announced the company’s 2015/2016 season. The company will bring an Idaho premier of a renowned Twyla Tharp ballet, Nine Sinatra Songs, to its repertory in February and wrap the season with audience favorite, The Sleeping Beauty. Ballet Idaho will also repeat two series of the popular NewDance, Up Close, the company’s contemporary project. Season tickets are on sale now.

NewDance, Up Close Returns to Kick Off The 2015/2016 Season

In November, and then with a new series again in March, Ballet Idaho returns with the acclaimed NewDance, Up Close contemporary dance project. Having sold out performances the prior season, the series comes back with fresh choreography by Ballet Idaho company members and other local choreographers in the intimate 200-seat Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy. The collection of short contemporary ballets prove to be refreshing, sometime raw, always original, and explore the depth of Ballet Idaho. Artistic Director, Peter Anastos said, “There are always surprises in this series, boundaries pushed, risks taken, ideas explored, all in the close proximity and intimacy of our own theatre.” The series will kick off the 2015/2016 season in November and repeat again, with all new works in March.

Ballet Idaho Lights up the Holidays with The Nutcracker

The week before Christmas, Ballet Idaho will bring the Treasure Valley its most joyous holiday gift with its beloved production of Peter Anastos’ The Nutcracker, a Boise holiday tradition. A wonderful ballet for the entire family, The Nutcracker is the perfect way to introduce young children to the power and beauty of classical dance. Tchaikovsky’s magical score, the fairytale scenery and vibrantly theatrical staging combine to create a visually stunning production of The Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker tells the story of a little girl named Clara who is given a magical nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve. She encounters the frightful mouse king before embarking on a journey through the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets. Young and old alike will experience the production’s many special effects, including the growing Christmas tree and the stunning snow scene.

Ballet Idaho Brings the Idaho Premier of Famed Choreographer Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs

Ballet Idaho has been granted the rights to perform Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs, the choreographer’s first time ever in Idaho. Ms. Tharp, an American choreographer known for her work with her own company and her motion picture work, including Hair (1979) and Ragtime (1981) has won Tony and Emmy Awards. Nine Sinatra Songs has become a popular classic, presenting its view of 1950’s social dancing through the nostalgic but sharpened eyes of the 1980s. Oscar de la Renta’s dresses and tuxedos flash with a similar double edge of past and present eras. The program includes classic Sinatra—including “One for My Baby,” “Strangers in the Night,” and “My Way”. Tharp upscales traditional ballroom dancing with the active participation of the female dancer in styles ranging from tango to flamenco to exhibition disco. That program will also include George Balanchine’s Valse Fantasie, courtesy of the George Balanchine Trust. The choreography presents a windswept pattern of pure dancing, attuned to the joyfulness of its waltz rhythms. Alex Ossadnik’s Scheherezade returns, as does Peter Anastos’ jazzy Ravel Piano Concerto. The winter repertory will perform over one weekend in February at the Morrison Center.

The Sleeping Beauty Wraps Season

The Sleeping Beauty, with glorious music by Tchaikovsky, is considered one of the greatest ballet stories of all time. The ballet is set in the regal style of Louis XIV and incorporates many 18th century court dances. With incredibly intricate costumes and mood-inducing scenery, this production is not only magical but truly awe-inspiring. We hope you will enjoy a family day at the ballet that will create a lifelong memories for all of you!
