Repertory-Program

Dance is too big to fit inside one definition. Join us as we explore dance in both balletic and contemporary styles as we ask you and ourselves; how do you (re)Define dance?

Ballet Idaho’s winter repertory program, (re)Define explores dance in both contemporary and classical balletic styles and asks the question; how do you define dance? (re)Define will feature the work of 5 different choreographers including George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, Penny Saunders’ Berceuse, Alejandro Cerrudo’s Lickety-Split, the U.S. premiere of Craig Davidson’s Ambiguous Content, and Dreamland, a world premiere by Danielle Rowe.

The evening opens with George Balanchine’s seminal work for five couples, Allegro Brillante, courtesy of The George Balanchine Trust. Set to the rousing Tchaikovsky score for piano and orchestra, Balanchine himself shared that this work contained, “Everything I know about classical ballet in thirteen minutes”. This joyous and technically demanding work is a powerhouse of the Balanchine canon.

Penny Saunders lends a sweeping and intricate duet in Berceuse, set to Benjamin Godard’s gorgeous piece of the same name. Berceuse, meaning ‘lullaby’ in French, explores the nuanced line between classical and contemporary movement and zooms in on a relationship, amplifying all of its twists and turns as it falls forward through time.

Australian Choreographer Craig Davidson closes the first half of the evening with his visually stunning and innovative, Ambiguous Content, which makes its U.S. premiere at Ballet Idaho. Davidson’s choreography explores our sense of belonging as it weaves in and out of numerous musical landscapes and choreographic constructions.

We open part two of the evening with Alejandro Cerrudo’s beguiling Lickety-Split, a lighthearted yet deeply moving work set to the music of Devandra Banhart. Danced by three couples, Lickety-Split is a contemporary work exploring the unpredictable layers of love.

Rounding out the evening we have Dreamland, a world premiere by Danielle Rowe, whose work has been commissioned and performed across the globe. A piece inspired by an anxiety dream, Dreamland is an emotionally evocative and compelling journey into our subconscious.
