Classes & Programs

BIA has four divisions, which offer different options for students and their individual dance goals and trajectory, whether pursuing a professional career or studying for enjoyment and recreation. Scroll to find more information on the Children’s Division, Preparatory and Pre-Professional Division, Youth Extracurricular Division, and Adult classes.

Children's Division

Ages 3-8

The Children’s Division introduces children to the joy of dance. In a creative and nurturing environment, students will develop ballet fundamentals, coordination, and movement skills.

Lower & Upper Division

Ages 8-18

The Pre-Professional / Preparatory Division offers training for 8-18 year olds with training hours progressively increasing as students advance through the levels. To foster versatility and supplement their ballet focus, students also take jazz, contemporary, and partnering classes.

Youth Division

Ages 9-12

Looking to explore dance without a full commitment? Our extracurricular classes offer the flexibility to build your own schedule or simply try out dance. Youth Division classes can also be integrated into any existing Lower or Upper Division schedule.

The Adult Division offers beginning through advanced adult ballet classes to the community. Students 13+ years who wish to begin or continue ballet training are welcome. Ballet Idaho Academy’s Competition Program is comprised of Academy students chosen to represent BIA in an outstanding manner. These competing dancers are selected based on level and age and meet our technical, physical, and emotional strength standards. Participants will work one-on-one and in group settings with experienced coaches to further develop their technique, artistry, and performance confidence under high-pressure circumstances all before competing at renowned ballet competitions.

The benefits of participating in BIA’s Competition Program extend far beyond the actual competition. Students will accelerate their technical and artistic progress. Ballet Idaho Academy selects students based on their readiness and potential to compete successfully. Students must be self-motivated, hardworking, focused, and dedicated. Each season, all participating competitors and one coach attend a competition together. Competitors may compete their solos and ensemble routines at any competition.

Outreach Programs

Ballet Idaho’s mission is to engage with Idaho communities to create immersive dance performances and educational experiences that are accessible to all. Through our outreach programs, Learning Through Dance, Youth Ensemble, and Student Matinees, Ballet Idaho is able to connect with the Boise community through the gift of dance. Sarah Powell gracefully and enthusiastically coordinates all three programs.

Ballet Idaho’s Learning Through Dance (LTD) program is in its 20th year. Developed in collaboration with Boise State University, lessons correspond to the 3rd grade curriculum while integrating movement and music. These classes and teaching artists are provided free of charge to schools through generous funding from foundations and grants.

During the 10th and final week is a short performance from Ballet Idaho Academy’s Youth Ensemble, a Q&A, and a student performance, where the students perform their dance and show other steps and concepts they have learned.

The Ballet Idaho Youth Ensemble program encourages the development of each young dancer through experiences that inspire excellence in dance, education, and life. Comprised of upper-level students of Ballet Idaho Academy, our Youth Ensemble performs for third graders at schools participating in our Learning Through Dance (LTD) educational outreach program. Members act as ambassadors of the ballet to Treasure Valley schools and other community venues including Art In The Park, Capitol City Farmer’s Market, Idaho Botanical Gardens, and more.

Ballet Idaho has partnered with Boise Independent School District and the Morrison Center Arts Education Programs to provide the magic of a live professional ballet performance to school children. Students from the Boise School District as well as schools throughout the Treasure Valley and Idaho view excerpts of our full length ballets at the Morrison Center for Performing Arts. These performances are free of charge through generous funding from sponsors and grants. Each season, the fall, winter, and spring student matinee performances reach over 5,400 students. In conjunction with the student showings, Ballet Idaho provides the teachers with a study guide that provides students with a broader understanding of the performing arts and the historical context behind each production.
